Tips for Dressing Svelte

We can't always have the body we'd really like so here are some tips to help you look fabulous no matter your budget or body type. These tips come out of The Thrifty Girl's Guide to Glamour: Living the Beautiful Life on Little or No Money by Susie Galvez.

1. Stand up straight. This squares your shoulders, pulls in your tummy and lengthens the line of your body. You'll look pounds lighter instantly.

2. Get a full length mirror. Check yourself out, front and back. Often it's the rear view-a skirt that cups your bottom, a pleat that won't lie flat- that advertises pounds, and somehow you are the only one who doesn't notice.

3. Wear darker colors. Dark colors are the ultimate slimmer.

4. Buy a good bra.

5. Whenever appropriate, wear heels to add a few slenderizing inches of height.

6. Rethink your hair. A shorter, simpler cut with a little height on top might make your neck (and you) seem longer and slimmer.

7. Avoid excess details. Generally, things like ruffles, gathers, pleats, piping and patch pockets add pounds.

8. A large bulky label can create an unwelcome bulge behind the neckline. Simply cut it out.

9. Talk with experienced sales people. Wardrobe consultants are often available in shops and department stores. The can be a valuable resource when analyzing your own figure strengths and flaws.

10. Chuck the chunk. Do not wear platform shoes. Simple, low-cut classic pumps help legs look longer.
